Carl von Linden's convention would take separate gases like sulfur dioxide, ammonia, and methyl chloride. By combining these gases, von Linden found a favorable way to convert these gases into liquids and work on chilling the air in the appliance itself. The mixture of these gases was not always safe, however. This is why in the late 1920s, refrigerator manufacturers switched to the use of Freon.
