Money-Saving Kitchen Tip: Turn That Old Chest Freezer Into a High-Efficiency Refrigerator

I know, it's pathetic that at age nearly-60, I know next to nothing about electricity. I do know that compact fluorescents use less than incandescent bulbs, though Cfls are no ecological picnic. So we've changed out most of the bulbs around Taylor Springs, Nm.

I also know about phantom electricity, the power that you're using even when things, like the Tv, are "off." So, because I'm writing about this, I just got up and went around shutting down power strips, and the Ups the Tv's plugged into, and the overhead fan, and the power cord for the indoor satellite radio. None of those appliances is in use while the day, when I'm home by myself, so why should they be pulling juice.

2 Door Compact Refrigerator

But the one appliance that's on all the time, that runs when it wants to, and is the biggest energy gobbler and least efficient of all is - the refrigerator. We have an old Crosley, which predates the energy Star ratings. We don't have a Kill-a-Watt meter (available for everywhere), so we don't know exactly how much electricity we're using, but I'm sure it's over 0 a year, maybe a lot over, and it's stupid.

I have long known that refrigerators, by design, don't work well. You're making cold by removing heat using compressors and motors and coils and fans, then you vent the heat into the kitchen, which in summer helps kick in your A/C. And every time you open the refrigerator or freezer door, you dump all the cold air out of the unit, forcing it to run again. Insane.

I've read about converting a top-opening chest freezer for use as a refrigerator. They make sense: they're best insulated than quarterly stand-up refrigerators, and because they open from the top, the cold stays inside instead of running out onto the floor. I've seen one conversion in use, in an off-the-grid house in Indiana, and it worked great, but as I said, I'm not much of an electrician, so I've never made a chest fridge of my own. Yeah, most chest freezers are smaller than approved household refrigerators, but we tend to keep a lot of stuff in the fridge that could, and should, be kept in the pantry instead. And we tend to just put stuff in the fridge every which way; a slight assosication and forethought wouldn't kill us, especially if it results in permanent savings.

So I had written on my to-do sheet, "chest refrigerator," and started poking around the internet to see if I could find a cheap meter for converting a small chest freezer to a refrigeration unit, and save a bunch of energy... And money.

And voila. Over at Mikey Sklar and Wendy Jehanara Tremayne's site, http://blog.HolyScrapHotSprings.com, "Digital homesteading & making all our stuff in Truth or Consequences, New Mexico," I found a plug-in controller unit made by Mikey, for converting freezers to refrigerators. Sklar says it'll sell out energy consumption from 0/yr. To less than /yr., so the unit will pay for itself in about six months.

And with 200 million refrigerators in the Us alone, the potential savings are mammoth, both in dollars and in costs to the environment. Let's see, that's 200 million times 0 a year; that's billion a year in electricity that we could cut to billion, just by installing a plug-in machine into a used chest freezer. That's got to be the equivalent of a power plant or two, easy. A no brainer; no household should be without one.

By insulating the sides and front, leaving space where the air intake at the lowest is located, and not outside up the back, where heat's vented, you can cut the energy use even further. Have you ever felt the side of your refrigerator, and noticed that it's all the time slightly cool? That's because that even though the walls and door are insulated, they're not insulated enough, and a simple Styrofoam-and-paneling enclosure is actually a worthwhile addition.

So, as an environmentalist and cheapskate, I've ultimately got this conversion on my Xmas wish list. There's a used appliance store up in Raton that I'm going to check out for a low-cost, working chest freezer. Free or cheap at a yard sale would be good, too.

Are Led Lights Worth It?

The Assumptions

Everyone is trying to save money and vigor today. The first thing you are told to do is replace incandescent lights with new technology lights. This saves vigor but does it save you money? I want to take a few minutes to run the numbers on the new and not so new lights out there. This won't be an in-depth summary on lighting just a check to see if the new lights are worth the upfront expense.

2 Door Compact Refrigerator

I will use 10 cents a Kilowatt Hour for the cost of electricity (0.10/Kwh). I will assume 4,000 hours of use a year. This is about midpoint for a sell or cafeteria occupancy. I am using a 60 watt incandescent light as the basis of the calculation, so my comparison lights will have 800 lumens plus or minus. I will look at the prices on a 1 year, 5 year and 10 year scale. The cost of money is 7%. This will be foremost in the comparison section because once you buy the lights you don't have that money left to spend on something else or earn you money. Below will be an yearly cost of ownership, this is the price of the bulb amortized at 7% over the life span of the bulb divided by 4,000 hour per year.

Incandescent Lights
For the purposes of this exercise I will assume that incandescent lights are free. A quick price check shows I can get 8 packs for less than 2 dollars so I am rounding this cost to zero.

60 watts x 4,000 hours = 240,000 watts (Watts per year). 240 Kwh x .10 = .00 per year to run the incandescent bulb. Annual cost of possession = .00. (Since the bulb cost nothing the cost to own the bulb is also .00.)

Fluorescent
I am using a 13 watt contract fluorescent they put out about 900 lumens and last about 8,000 hours and cost about .00.

13 watts x 4,000 hours = 52,000 watts (Watts per year) 52 Kwh x .10 = .20 per year to run the fluorescent bulb. Annual cost of possession = .40 (.00 at 7% for 2 years)

Led
Led lights are a dinky more complicated than the others. I am using a Led based light with similar light yield as the above 2 lights, 13 watts, 900 lumens and 50,000 hour life. The price I am using is .00. You can find cheaper lights with longer life spans but the color of the light is not collate able to the others.

13 watts x 4,000 hours = 52,000 watts (Watts per year) 52 Kwh x .10 = .20 per year to run the Led bulb. Annual cost of possession = .00 (.00 at 7% for 12.5 years)

The Comparison

Incandescent = 1 year .00 - 5 year 0.00 - 10 year 0.00 Fluorescent = 1 year .60 - 5 year .00 - 10 year 6.00 Led = 1 year .20 - 5 year .00 - 10 year 2.00

Conclusion

Led prices would have to drop to .00 to be even with Cfl or the wattage would have to be cut in half. By the time you read this it may already be true, so get the current prices and your galvanic bill and run the numbers for your business.

3 Ways to Find the Best Rated Refrigerators

If you're shopping for a new refrigerator, you'll swiftly find that every salesperson has their own favorite brand (often the one with the highest commission!) and it can be tough to get an unbiased opinion.

Fortunately, there are any places you can turn for objective reviews.

2 Door Compact Refrigerator

1. Consumer Reports

Consumer Reports publishes a magazine and maintains a website where they review all kinds of distinct products and services. One of the most base types of products they cover is kitchen appliances, refrigerators being one of them.

Most social libraries subscribe to the magazine, so you can often find modern backissues there. If you go back any months, you're quite likely to find a favorable review of varied brands and models of refrigerators.

You can also check their website, which has a lot of information on it as well, to see what reviews they have posted there.

2. The Internet

There are fullness of websites that let citizen post reviews of varied products. Amazon.com is a good example of one of these. Most products they sell have reviews from citizen who have bought and used the products.

These reviews will give you a pretty good idea of the kind of results other citizen have had with a particular brand or model.

The key is to find sites and products that have a uncostly amount of reviews. If there is only one or two reviews, they could be biased one way or the other, but not an indication of the most base perceive citizen have had.

3. citizen You Know

It never hurts to ask whatever you know what kind of perceive they've had with the brand they have. This is particularly helpful if you know whatever who has had to have their fridge serviced or repaired recently, since they probably have a good idea of how easy that perceive was.

If you know a contractor or someone who has recently remodeled a kitchen or even built a house, they are also probably a good reserved supply since they likely went through the explore process themselves.

What Is The Best Type Of Refrigerator To Buy?

When buying a new refrigerator, the type of fridge to buy comes into play. You would want to set your sights on the right type of fridge so you can maximize food storage and cut back on power consumption. Moreover, these machines are thinkable, to last for a decade, give and take a incorporate of years. They are long-term investments.

Types Of Refrigerators To select From

2 Door Compact Refrigerator

The available types you can find today are the freestanding full size fridges, the counter depth refrigerators, the built-in ones, the under counter or contract fridges, top and bottom mount refrigerators, French door fridges and side-by-side refrigerators.

What Is The Best One For You?

If you are finding for a easy fridge that requires minimal space in your kitchen, the top-mount refrigerator is a good choice. It does not cost much and it does not take up a lot of space. Moreover, it does not wish a lot of maintenance or repair.

The freezer is placed at the top so you have easy way to the food stored in there. The shelves in the bottom compartments are just right for daily food storage needs. If you have mean food storage needs, this is a good choice. The bottom-freezer counterpart of these refrigerators is not regularly widely available. However, they regularly share the same storage benefits as the top-mount ones.

If you are finding for more developed features such as a water dispenser or an ice maker, a side-by-side refrigerator might just be the thing you need. The freezer area and the main fridge is situated side by side with each other. You can have easy way to the food you have stored.

You would want to use this refrigerator if you have ample space in your kitchen. It tends to occupy a lot of space. This is also quite expensive. Also expect the maintenance and repair charges to be more expensive. Big and bulky boxes of food might not also fit in the side-by-side compartments of this machine.

Go for the contract ones if you are a dorm or an apartment dweller. They are just right for small food storage needs. Many contract machines today are power efficient.

The cabinet-depth refrigerators are for those who want a seamless look in their kitchen. They have the same depth with the cabinets installed in your home. This is intimately linked to built-in fridges as they tend to have a seamless look as well. These refrigerators are for those who want their kitchen to look immaculate all the time.

Choose the right type of refrigerator when buying. The wrong fridge can cause space or storage problems in your house.
